More Awards
At the recent Building Designers Association of Australia award night, our Avalon cliff house won the Best Alterations and Additions over $1 million category, and Best use of Colorbond, while competing against entrants from all over Australia. These are our 59th and 60th awards, and demonstrate our ongoing commitment to design excellence.
The first of these awards is difficult to win as it always attracts the most entries, and the $1m + category is for the best of the best.
The substantial make – over of this iconic beach house involved resolving existing spatial and energy efficiency deficiencies, while preserving the dramatic curved roofline. The addition of a bottom story bedroom and bathroom addressed the first of these issues, while the striking reverse curved roof over the new outdoor space added both functional amenity and architectural continuity. New north facing doors accessing this new balcony. and a new location for the kitchen significantly increased the flow between the indoor and outdoor entertaining areas.
To address the energy issue, all the existing windows and doors were replaced with double glazing, and many of the windows were converted from fixed to openable to increase cross flow ventilation, and dramatically improve energy efficiency and comfort.
Special mention to Alexander Kidd Design who were responsible for the interior detailing.

And the recognition continued as the Thorp Boatshed ( designed by Simon ) and Palm Beach studio were both finalists in their respective categories.
